I wrote in my post, "My new (actually re...</title><content type='html'>Hi, Rob,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wrote in my post, &amp;quot;My new (actually refurbished) scanner arrived last week and I&amp;#39;ve been putting it through the paces here in my studio.&amp;quot;  So, I was completely aware that the scanner was refurbished.  Now, I cannot remember if the notice of it being refurbished was pronounced or sort of small and in an obscure place on the page.  But, I certainly saw it.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My scanner has worked wonderfully well!:) Yes!  Worth the $65.00. And yeah, the disk that came with my scanner had ridiculously old software on it. But it was easy to download the most recent software from HP&amp;#39;s website.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I find the scan quality for documents is fine, but compared to my high-quality art scanner, the HP really isn&amp;#39;t very good quality.&lt;br /&gt;I&amp;#39;ve found the document scanning doesn&amp;#39;t go quite as smoothly after a year of ownership, there are more misfeeds... One of the big reasons is the community. Very friendly and helpful!:)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Phil,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I&amp;#39;ve also borked my PCLinuxOS system. I borked it myself once when I updated from two repositories at the same time ( Yeah....I know......I was a real dimwit) but I restored the entire system and all my apps in 25 mins from a LiveCd I had made. Try doing that in Windows!.&lt;br /&gt;I still need to run Windows as a special Genealogical application I have will not run in Wine and I can&amp;#39;t do without Adobe Acrobat 9.0.  However i&amp;#39;ve discovered the joys of Virtualbox and have installed Windows in it plus my essential Windows applications. I use their PASS service and have the latest and greatest in updates.  Howeer, you&amp;#39;re correct. I f I so choose, I can simply instlall all the software I need, and then just keep it status quo. I have now dual boot an I&amp;#39;m a very big fan of Linux. The problem is for me now that after upgrade to 9.10 my laptop is blocking/restarting very often in Linux. &lt;br /&gt;Now I&amp;#39;m writing from WindowsXP because it&amp;#39;s seems that here is OK for now and the system is stable. Last weekend I setup Win7 on my wife&amp;#39;s work laptop and her netbook (unbelievably, her company writes scripts only for IE6 and MSOffice). The task took several hours nonetheless. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;About midway through the upgrade, my wife finally shut me up with a &amp;quot;All right, all right already!&amp;quot; after I went on and on about how simple and fast it is to install or upgrade a Linux machine and how much faster her netbook would be with a distro like Ubuntu Remix. Hilarious!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With Linux, you don&amp;#39;t suffer from proprietary limitations and headaches. There is:&lt;br /&gt;-- No activation&lt;br /&gt;-- No validation&lt;br /&gt;-- No serial numbers&lt;br /&gt;-- No license numbers&lt;br /&gt;-- No product IDs&lt;br /&gt;-- No inevitable support call&lt;br /&gt;-- No forced automatic updates&lt;br /&gt;-- No cost to upgrade (I can upgrade via USB or even network)&lt;br /&gt;-- No cost! Printing! there is no good way to get photoquality pictures out of Gimp or linux in general. &lt;br /&gt;Don&amp;#39;t get me wrong I use linux daily.
